For over five years now, I have been privileged to take part in a continual online critique group. I say “continual” because even though we have a regular submissions schedule, we also correspond daily-- critiquing, chatting, and cheering each other on. We’ve not only shared and reviewed each others’ work – we have supported each other through transcontinental moves, new babies, and new jobs (all fodder for writing, I might add!) We shoulder each other’s rejections as our own, and rejoice in each other’s successes. And we have enjoyed success, I believe in great part due to the synergy of the group. When we attend conferences, we share notes with each other. When we hear about a contest, we pass it along. When we read a great website, we send the link to the group. And so on and so on, not to mention critiquing each other’s work. Members of this group have sold four picture books, an easy reader, a young adult novel, and several stories/rebuses/articles/poems to Highlights for Children, Hopscotch for Girls, and Guidepostsforkids.com over the years. Which is why I say, get yo’self into a critique group, fast! I want to thank the members of the “Scribblers” as well as former members and “guest writers.” Lisa, Sue, Nannette, Pina, Katia and Laurel, you have all inspired and encouraged me. Thank you. |
